First Month of School, Done! - What’s Next?

By Lizette Najera-Perez

First Month of School, Done!

With that in mind, here’s a little recap and a small compilation of what to look forward to for the rest of the semester whether you're a returning honors student or a new freshman in the program. We’ll start off with the events on campus. We've already had numerous throughout just the first month—Smorgasport, Week of Welcome, and the 75th Anniversary Concert, just to name a few. And events like these continue throughout the semester quite consecutively and you can always stay updated by using your “Events and Orgs” chicklet on your Long Beach State student apps.

These events can be a much needed break for honors students who are stressed or in general if you want to know how to get more involved on campus. October will especially be packed as it includes Hispanic heritage month, OUTober, Halloween and overall the coziest UHP workshops and events. Since October has so many themes, most of these events will be unique and may provide great new experiences, like the pupusa-making class the University had for Hispanic Heritage month, or the Loteria event on October 14 hosted by the UHP, which was sent out in the Honors Weekly Newsletter that contains all events happening within the program as well as important reminders for its students. That being so, this month also contains the dreaded midterm season, but because of these events, honors students will have something to look forward to after tests, or while in their midst of studying or in general living a college life.

Another thing to keep in mind after the first month of school is advising starting for all new Honors Program students. The UHP Advising team will have its last couple workshops in the next 2 weeks, which is something extremely important to keep track of, as for new students attending a workshop for advising is mandatory. Another update for honors students is to start learning about badges because as the semester goes on the program will be hosting events that count towards them. For returning honor program students there are still workshops and events to attend to continue working towards badges and just professional experience.

Since we're officially back in school, honors students should make sure to keep up with deadlines and test for their classes, as well as for the Honors Program itself. Simultaneously, students should also make sure to continue to enjoy college life and take a much needed break whenever.
