Going to college can be isolating, intimidating, and scary. I know for me I was scared of how I would be able to connect with others. But as I came to CSULB I ended up meeting the best group of friends. Funny thing is, we probably would’ve never been friends if it wasn’t for dorming. We all are in majors that are quite literally all across various parts of campus; the likelihood of us crossing paths and actually having a conversation would be slim to none. But dorming made us have conversations and get to know each other because we all live either right next door (suitemates) or right across the hall. I would say some of the best things I enjoy with my friends is doing school work together. Sometimes we go to coffee shops. For example, Philz is a great spot for us ‘cause we like walking around 2nd street after some intense studying sessions. Another big place for us is libraries, primarily the Huntington beach library because of the green scenery, beautiful water fountains, and huge spaces for studying. Or we love to just go to the CSULB library, especially during peak finals times when the hours are extended. I believe that my friendships allow me to be my best student to the fullest and greatest extent.
I asked my friends this question: How does our friendship enrich your academic experience?
Their responses:
“One thing that enriches the experience is studying together all the time and also going to coffee shops around Long Beach.” - Theresa (Journalism major)
“Our friendship enriches my academic experience by sharing our experiences in classes and problems. We hold each other responsible when it comes to academic work and provide help to each other if needed. We study together which helps us stay on top of our work. I also don’t feel like I’m alone when my friends are going through similar situations as me. Our friendship enriches my academic experience very well!” - Emily (History major)
Friendships are funny in that you find them when you least expect it. My friends were an unexpected but needed surprise. This is advice to anyone reading: go out to an event that brings people together based on similar experiences or similar interests. I met my friends by meeting them at the transfer student social in our dorms. Then on campus, for example, the Honors events such as paint mixers, annual bowling events, or college major mixers can be a great step. Meeting at those types of events make it so much less intimidating since there is already an established commonality. Friends bring such joy to our lives but also help us achieve things academically in ways we might not be aware of because it is so fun. Make studying fun, make everything fun and do it with your friends; new and old!
