Midterms can be one of the most stressful times for students in college, with exams, projects, essays, and assignments gathering simultaneously. Balancing multiple classes while maintaining peace of mind can feel overwhelming, but with the proper techniques and tips, you can ease some of your stress and set yourself up for success. Whether you are an experienced student or a first-year taking your first big tests, it is always important to look for new or better ways to refine your study habits and figure out how to manage your time.

With midterms in full swing, I asked UHP students for their best study tips or advice.

“I would advise not to procrastinate on projects, or else it all might pile up, and to study, I try to devote a day or two to a specific class and make sure to take breaks while studying,” Olivia GrosJean, first-year student said. Procrastination is a big issue that many students struggle with, but with the right motivation, students can stay on top of their workload.

Another first-year Honors student, Joshua Paras, recommended, “Use the time during breaks between waiting for classes to study. Focus on materials you know you are struggling with and touch up on things you are confident about.” Additionally, Joshua proposed, “Do practice quizzes and try recalling certain notes from memory because it activates your brain to rummage through your memory library. And get enough sleep each day”. Joshua recalled from his previous Comm 110 class with the Honors Program that even though studying may be hard to start, it begins with the right mindset and self-talk.

Sleep is something everyone needs to feel energized and powered through the day, which was also highly encouraged by first-year Aleeda Lopez. “My biggest piece of advice for midterms is to make sure you get enough sleep, especially the night before the exam. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t retain information as well,” Aleeda Lopez said.

Depending on the midterm or exam, I follow different strategies to help me study and conquer midterms. It is essential not to procrastinate when studying because distractions will only delay your learning process; however, remember to take care of yourself and your mental health. I have found success in rewriting notes and creating practice quizzes because they help me remember past information and retain new information. Lastly, it is key to have confidence in yourself and believe that you can achieve anything you work hard towards.

No matter how challenging midterms may seem, managing your time wisely, staying organized, and taking care of your well-being can help you succeed. Good luck to UHP students taking their midterms the following week. If you have already completed your midterms, I hope you did well and tried your best! Spring Break is just around the corner, beginning March 31 to April 6, 2025. I hope everyone enjoys their time off. Go Beach!
