First things first, let's go over what the UHP Thesis/Creative project requirement is, and what it will ask you to do. In a two-semester process, the project allows you to either follow the traditional thesis form of writing a research paper or work on a creative project that you develop the guidelines for. A creative project could entail anything other than the typical research paper, such as writing a novel, or filming and directing a short film. With that quick brief, we can move on to the tips I wish I followed when I started my Honors Thesis journey.
Attend an Honors Symposium:
My UHP496 class required me to attend one Honors Symposium panel at the end of the semester, and it cleared up a million questions for me. Towards the end of the semester, the UHP will send out an email inviting all Honors students to attend the Symposium, and I highly recommend attending a panel with a topic that interests you! It might help you understand what projects are attainable or inspire you to move in a certain direction.
Use the resources made available to you:
The UHP has a canvas page with tons of helpful information further detailing how to start your project, along with a database of previously completed projects for you to view. Not only do the Honors Advisors and Program directions host workshops regarding information on the projects (check your weekly Honors announcement email for dates and times), but they also have YouTube videos that explain what the project consists of if you're a visual learner.
Pay attention to your deadlines:
Procrastination gets the best of us, and it is important to be aware of the deadlines for the project and plan accordingly. When forming your research/creative project proposal, keep in mind who you can ask to be your advisor, and don't wait until the last second to ask. You want to give yourself enough time to ask around and give them enough time to respond! Time management is an extremely important part of the UHP thesis requirement, and it never hurts to remind yourself of the deadlines you have ahead.
Lastly, your Honors Program advisors are always here for you, and if you have any questions or need clarification, drop in their advising hours and they would be happy to assist you!
